Rodela takes Western "Regional" Midget opener at Stockton.

Jerome Rodela of El Monte, Calif. is the early leader in the 2002 USAC Western Regional Midget Car Series standings after winning the USAC/BCRA co-sanctioned 30-lapper Saturday night at the Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway.

Rodela put his Fontana/Hawk in front on lap 17 and led the final 14 laps to beat Marc DeBeaumont, Cliff Servetti, Glenn Carson and Floyd Alvis. Rodela also paced the qualifications for Saturday night's event. Sleepy Tripp led the first five laps before a tangle forced him from competition. Carson then led three laps before yielding to DeBeaumont, whom Rodela finally passed for the win.

The Western Regional Midget Car Series resumes with another race at Stockton July 27.

Due to track construction resulting in revised scheduling, the July 6 USAC Ford Focus Midget Car race at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway has been removed from the 2002 calendar.
