Action Track Return
Tony Stewart Racing's Jones, Stenhouse, Jr., Ready For First Outing of Season at Terre Haute Action Track
INDIANAPOLIS (May 15, 2007) -- For Tony Stewart Racing's Levi Jones and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Saturday's 37th Annual Tony Hulman Classic event at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track will set the stage for a battle between the veteran and the rookie. One competitor has found victory lane at the facility numerous times while the other looks to get his first USAC Sprint Car Series win there.
For Jones, Saturday's event will serve as his homecoming, as the 24-year-old veteran from nearby Olney, Ill., has already begun to form his own legacy at Terre Haute. In 2005, en route to the USAC National Sprint Car Series title, Jones went three-for-three at the facility, winning the July 22 Indiana Sprint Week event to kick off his dominating run and sweeping the final two events of the season at the track on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. In his last appearance at the facility on Oct. 7, 2006, Jones finished 18th in the USAC Sprint feature event.
Jones and the No. 20 Tony Stewart Racing/Chevrolet/Maxim team enter this Saturday's event ranked third in the USAC Sprint championship standings with 166 points. He is only 37 points behind series leader Darren Hagen. Jones has one series victory to his credit this season, having won the series opener at Lawrenceburg Speedway on April 21.
Stenhouse, Jr., will take to the dirt at Terre Haute for the first time behind the wheel of a USAC Sprint car. Saturday's appearance will serve as another stepping stone in an already impressive career. Coming off last Saturday's commanding USAC/POWERi National Midget Car Series win at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., Stenhouse, Jr., has wasted little time in proving himself to be a force in the non-winged racing ranks. The 19-year-old standout has made both a USAC Silver Crown and a USAC Midget start at Terre Haute, having competed in the Sumar Classic 100 on Aug. 5, 2006, and the historic Hut Hundred event on Sept. 9, 2006.
Saturday marks only the second start of the season for Stenhouse, Jr. The Olive Branch, Miss., native was named as the interim driver for Tracy Hines, who continues to recover from injuries sustained in an off-road motorcycle accident on April 30.
The Terre Haute Action Track is located off I-70 at Exit 7. Registration will begin on May 19 at 3 p.m. EDT, with the driver's meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Hot laps are set to begin at 6 p.m. For more information regarding Terre Haute or to purchase tickets for Saturday's 37th Annual Tony Hulman Classic, log on to www.terrehauteactiontrack.com or call 317-831-4404.
Quote from Levi Jones, driver of the No. 20 TSR/Chevrolet/Maxim
Terre Haute is one of the most historic half-mile dirt facilities in the country. You seem to be very at ease when competing there. Is it safe to say it's one of your favorite tracks?
"Anytime someone asks me if I enjoy racing at Terre Haute, my answer is always that it's one of my favorite tracks. Being from Olney, Ill., I always have a ton of friends and family in the stands, which is a real confidence booster. The track itself is fun. It's big, fast and wide in certain areas. You can race hard with someone and race them all the way around. The speed that you carry at Terre Haute is just phenomenal. It's something you have to get used to. It was really cool to win so many races at Terre Haute in 2005. I think we've got a great shot at the win this Saturday and I think it would be really cool to put a win on the board for Chevrolet and Bass Pro Shops at such a historic track."
Quote from Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., driver of the No. 21 TSR/Chevrolet/Maxim
Are you looking forward to returning to Terre Haute with another series this weekend?
"I am really excited to get back to racing this weekend, especially knowing that we're headed to Terre Haute. I enjoyed competing in the midget and the silver crown car there last year and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to take a turn with the sprint car. The Tony Stewart Racing team has been great to work with and I know I'm going to have a great car and a great shot at winning again this Saturday. Levi (Jones, teammate) has won two sprint car races and I've won a midget race for Chevrolet and Bass Pro Shops so far this year. Hopefully, we'll have another victory to talk about after this weekend."
