SPARTA, KY - NASCAR Winston Cup Star Tony Stewart announced today he would attempt to qualify and drive in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, both scheduled for Sunday, May 27th. He assured Kentucky Speedway he will honor his USAC WorldCom Midget Series commitment at the track Friday night, May 11th.
The announcement slightly alters the previously announced schedule for Tony at Kentucky Speedway Friday, May 11th. Friday is the day all Indy teams will test and practice their machines for qualifying at the famed Indianapolis circuit.
Stewart will practice all day Friday at Indianapolis and will then depart via helicopter directly to Kentucky Speedway where he will honor his commitment to drive in the nights featured USAC event plus do an autograph session following the main event.
"This is certainly great news! We knew when Tony agreed to drive in the Indianapolis 500 that he would then have to practice May 11th. He called us today and said he would work it all out and still drive and meet the fans Friday night. This will be a very long day for Tony and truly shows how much he cares about the fans," said Mark F. Cassis, Executive Vice President/General Manager at Kentucky Speedway.
The gates will open Friday at 4:00 pm where fans can see the final practice by the ARCA Series on the 1.5-mile tri-oval. The short track heats up at 6 p.m. for an evening of short track excitement featuring the USAC Midget Car Series and the ARCA Lincoln Welder Truck Series.
Great seats still remain at the 66,000-seat venue for all 2001 events.
