Stanbrough takes 32nd "Tony Hulman Classic" at Terre Haute. Hines leads Sprint cars to Tri-State Sunday.
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. leads the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series to Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. Sunday night as the series returns to the 1/4-mile dirt track where he failed to make the feature event during last year's "Indiana Sprint Week."
Hines leads Derek Davidson by 66 points and Jay Drake by 80 in the new series standings after Saturday night's 32nd "Tony Hulman Classic" presented by The Furniture Gallery at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Hines finished second to winner Jon Stanbrough of Danville, Ind., while Drake, last year's Haubstadt "Indiana Sprint Week" victor, finished fourth.
Stanbrough caught A.J. Anderson on the 13th lap at Terre Haute and led the rest of the way in his Geiger Seamless Gutters Gaerte/Stealth to win the "Tony Hulman Classic" in his eighth attempt. Trailing runner-up Hines at the checkered flag were Tony Elliott, Drake and Boston Reid.
Flips sidelined several contenders at Terre Haute, most notably Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier Bud Kaeding and former race winner Dave Darland. Both flipped on their second qualifying laps and Darland was treated at Terre Haute Regional Hospital and released. Drivers Brian Hayden, Troy Lowery, Jonathan Vennard and Chris Kopczynski also flipped during the night's competition but there were no serious injuries.
Sunday night's Tri-State Speedway event opens with practice at 5:30 pm and qualifying at 6. The first race is slated for 7 and the feature event is 30 laps.
Hines has already presented his team, Dynamics, Inc. of Milford, Ohio, with the all-time record for USAC Sprint Car feature wins. His victories at Anderson, Ind. and Nazareth, Pa. earlier this season gave Dynamics 52 total, compared to Steve Stapp's 51.
