J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. boosted his USAC single-season feature victory record to 23 Saturday night at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and hopes to raise it to 24 this Wednesday night at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. The record includes wins in various USAC racing series and events.
The USAC National Sprint Car Series concludes its 2003 campaign with their initial appearance at the 4/10-mile North Carolina oval, marking the return of USAC Sprint racing to the Tarheel State after a 17-year hiatus. Sprint car practice at the "Charlotte Dirt Doubleheader Nationals" is set for 6:30 pm, with qualifying at 6:45 and racing at 8. The event includes the Southern All-Star Late Models.
Yeley will aim for a record-tying 14th National Sprint Car victory in Wednesday's 30-lap feature. Tom Bigelow won 14 features in 1977 before coming back to win the 1978 USAC Sprint Car title!
Yeley's 13th victory of the 2003 USAC Sprint Car season came in Saturday's 30-lap "Fall Harvest Classic" at the ½-mile dirt Terre Haute oval as he led all but the first three laps in his Tony Stewart Racing Mopar Twister. Fast qualifier Tracy Hines, Boston Reid, Bud Kaeding and Mat Neely trailed at the checkered flag.
Hines will figure prominently in Wednesday's Charlotte program, leading Jay Drake by only 13 points in the standings, but also locked in a three-way battle for the $5,000 cash bonus which accompanies a victory in the Earl's Plumbing Fast Qualifier Championship. Hines posted the fastest time at Terre Haute and now leads Drake by three and Yeley by four points. The top six qualifiers at Charlotte earn 9-6-4-3-2-1, so any one of the three could emerge with the $5,000 cash bonus!
Indy Racing League veteran Donnie Beechler of Springfield, Ill., who competed in Indy Racing League events at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1998 and 1999, returns to Charlotte for the USAC Sprint Car race and will drive the Arctic Cat/ACRA Auto.com DRC for DeSalle Motorsports of Indianapolis, Ind.
