This Saturday night's racing program at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track is absolutely critical for those with aspirations for this year's Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car championship.
The 1/2-mile dirt track will play host for the first time in 34 years to two 30-lap USAC Sprint features. The opening race on the card is the "Jan Opperman Classic" which was rained out on July 28, while the closer will be the "Fall Harvest Classic," following a full slate of preliminary races.
J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. and Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. trail series point leader Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. by 35 and 37 points respectively, with 132 available at Terre Haute! Darland passed up last weekend's USAC racing events recuperating from his September 22 accident at Rossburg, Ohio and his participation at Terre Haute remains in question.
Practice is scheduled to start at 5 pm with the 30-lap "Jan Opperman Classic" slated to start at 6:15. Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. is scheduled to start on the pole for the race which was originally scheduled as part of this year's "Indiana Sprint Week."
Jones is scheduled to drive the famed Hoffman Auto Racing Team's Kroger/Pringles/Folgers/Sunny Delight Gaerte/Stealth in Saturday's Terre Haute program and a victory would tie the team with Steve Stapp atop the all-time list of USAC career winners at 51.
Saturday's Terre Haute program also includes the USAC Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car Series in its final race of the season. Drivers Shane Hollingsworth and John Wolfe are separated by only three points in that series' standings. <pre> STOOPS FREIGHTLINER USAC SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS
