Memphis, TN -- October 7, 2003- Jerry Coons Jr. and Tyler Walker are looking to end the season with a strong finish for R.E. Technologies Racing at the Salt City 100 in Syracuse, New York on October 10-11th.
Jerry Coons Jr. is determined to make his second trip to Syracuse a success. Last season, the Tucson, Arizona native set a new track record for fastest qualifier at the New York State Fairgrounds. Coons timed in at 31.255 seconds at a speed of 115.182 mph. Jerry Coons Jr. started on the pole and led the first 14 laps of the Salt City 100 before being passed by Rich Tobias after a yellow flag restart. Jerry and the team finished on the podium in 2nd.
"I am happy to be back for this race," smiled Coons. "We have always worked well together. I am looking forward to returning to Super Dirt Week with this team."
Jerry Coons Jr. is no stranger to R.E. Technologies Racing. He drove for the team from 2000-2002 scoring two poles and five podium finishes. Coons will pilot the new J&J dirt chassis that he tested in Tulsa earlier this year.
"It is great to have Jerry back for this race," said Team Manager Chris Santucci.
"Our goal is to run up front again this weekend."
"We ran good at Syracuse last year," smiled Coons. "With the same team preparing the car as last year, I believe that we will be fast right out of the box. We will try to repeat this year, if not make ourselves one better."
"Jerry has six, 2nd place finishes in the last three years," said Santucci. "So I am sure he is hungry for his first win and so are we."
Coons finished 2nd at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and 4th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds driving for Steve Fox earlier this season in USAC Silver Crown action.
Tyler Walker will drive the Curb Records sponsored #35, the same car that Jerry Coons Jr. had success in last season.
"Jerry Coons Jr. has been about the only person to drive this car other than Tyler Walker. The Curb Records #35 is the same exact chassis that set a new track record at Syracuse."
"The R.E. Technologies Racing team has performed well all year," said Walker. We would love to cap the season off with a win in front of the great fans at Super Dirt Week."
At Syracuse, qualifying will be everything, so says R.E. Technologies Racing Team Manager Chris Santucci.
"The track, at Syracuse, is a lot harder than some of the other tracks that we run on because other classes of cars are running out there during Super Dirt Week," stated Santucci. The track starts off hard and ends up hard. That makes it a little easier to guess what you need to do than other miles we run on. Starting position at Syracuse is more critical than other tracks because the grove is normally very narrow."
O'REILLY'S TULSA 100 REVIEW
Donny Schatz and Tyler Walker tied their USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series career best finishes September 14th at the O'Reilly Tulsa 100 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Schatz came from the back of the pack to finish 11th and Walker finished 3rd for the second time this season.
Donny Schatz qualified the #115 ParkerStores car 15th quick. Tyler Walker was second quick and started outside the pole on the grid.
When the green flag fell, Walker charged in front of Yeley, delighting the large hometown crowd. Walker lead 7 laps before eventual race winner Bud Kaeding passed the Curb-Agajanian Special in lapped traffic. On lap 10 Schatz contacted a lapped car and spun in turn 4. The spin brought out the caution and forced Schatz to restart from the back. Undaunted, Schatz roared through the field picking off one driver at a time to finish 11th. Walker held onto 2nd giving it up to twice to J.J. Yeley. USAC officials called the race on lap 77 due to deteriorating track conditions. Walker finished in third.
The #35 Curb Records sponsored "Curb-Agajanian Special" is currently 5th in USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series entrant points. The R.E. Technologies-Curb-Agajanian owned machine trails the 4th place #11 Stewart-Snider Racing entry, driven by Jay Drake, by ten points.
Tyler Walker is currently sitting in 6th place in driver points. He trails 5th place Jay Drake by 10 points.
