Newly-crowned USAC Southwest Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, N.M. will mix business with pleasure this weekend as he and 11 other stars of the USAC series travel to the Hawaiian Islands to represent the sanctioning body in its initial outing in the 50th state.

USAC has never competed in Hawaii and the Friday and Saturday night (Nov. 14-15) races at Hawaii Motor Speedway expand USAC's repertoire to 43 states. Only Alaska, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Rhode Island and Wyoming remain as non-USAC entities.

Ziehl is riding a streak of four consecutive victories in the series, which concluded October 25 in New Mexico. Joining him in the mainland contingent will be 2002 USAC New Mexico/Arizona Sprint Champ Mike Boat of Phoenix, Ariz.; Arizona's Brandon Lane (Mesa), Robert Hall, Jr. (Show Low), Ronnie Clark (Tucson), Kaylene Verville (Avondale), Mike Martin (Yuma) and Shon Deskins and Bruce St. James (Phoenix); New Mexico's Dave Burns (Santa Fe); and Texans Leighton Crouch (Shallowater) and Beau Binder (El Paso).

A 30-lap feature event is slated both Friday and Saturday, concluding each night's racing program on the 1/4-mile dirt oval located in Western Honolulu.

The USAC stars will compete against the track's weekly regulars in this special event which does not offer series points.

The cars were flown to Hawaii November 1 by Pacific Air Cargo.
