Boat hopes to wrap up NM/AZ title in "Labor Day Swing"

Mike Boat of Phoenix, Ariz. could mathematically wrap up the 2002 USAC New Mexico/Arizona Sprint Car championship this weekend, with three back-to-back races on tap.

The series concludes October 12 at Las Cruces, N.M., but not before the "Labor Day Swing" which encompasses three different tracks this weekend. Friday night's venue is the brand-new Hollywood Hills Speedway in San Felipe Pueblo, N.M., while Saturday night's races are at Thunder Raceway in Show Low, Ariz. Sunday night's event is at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz.

Boat leads Mike Martin by 59 points but 216 total points are up for grabs in the three races. Drivers also are eyeing the Hal Burns Truck and Equipment "Labor Day Swing Shootout" Sunday at Phoenix. In order to qualify for that special race, which is in addition to the regularly-scheduled events on the Manzanita 1/2-mile, a driver must rank in the "top-16" in points earned from both the preceding night's races or be among the top four non-qualifiers from Sunday's "qualifying transfer" race.

Five different winners have emerged from the six NM/AZ Sprint races conducted so far in the USAC series' inaugural season, including female driver Kaylene Verville, who won at Show Low in May.
