Tucson's New USA Race Park Debuts With "Roger Mccluskey Classic" New Year's Day!
America's newest dirt track, United Sports Arizona (USA) Race Park, will debut with the inaugural "Roger McCluskey Classic" December 31-January 1 as Tucson, Ariz. celebrates one of its favorite sons.
The race, a special-event listing for USAC Southwest Sprint Cars, honors the memory of USAC's former Executive Vice-President and Competition Director and 1973 USAC National Driving Champion who passed away in 1991. McCluskey, a Tucson native, competed in 18 Indianapolis 500-Mile Races, finishing fifth in 1975. In addition to his 1973 National Championship, he also won the USAC Sprint Car title in 1963 and 1966 and the USAC Stock Car crown in 1969 and 1970. His career total of 55 USAC victories ranks 11th on USAC's all-time National list.
The 40-lap feature event will mark USAC's first-ever race on New Year's Day, following preliminary events on New Year's Eve (day) at the 3/8-mile dirt oval which has been completely refurbished since hosting its last race as Saguaro National Speedway in 2000.
The total Sprint Car purse is over $22,000, making this the largest purse in USAC Southwest Sprint Car history. The feature winner earns $5,000 and last place is worth $400.
Charles Davis, Jr., winner of one of USAC's recent races at Hawaii Motor Speedway, is among early entrants for this special event. Tucson's Jerry Coons, Jr. is also pre-entered, along with Southwest regulars Dave Burns, Brandon Lane, Ron Kratz, Keith Rauch and Chuck Buckman.
The New Year's Eve activities will include a "Dash for Cash" for the fastest six Sprint qualifiers offering $1,000 to win.
Practice each day gets under way at 1 pm and racing includes the Sprint Cars as well as pro-stocks, street stocks, factory stocks and modifieds.
The new facility is located on Los Reales, east of Alvernon, south of the Interstate 10 Craycroft Road exit.
