MADISON, ILL (MAY 3, 2000) -- If Bud Kaedling and the #44 CARQUEST Auto Parts USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet team feel at home this weekend at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis, they should -- CARQUEST logos and signage grace the Gateway facility because it's home of the NASCAR Busch Grand National CARQUEST 250, held each July.
"Last year we race at Gateway during the CARQUEST 250 and it felt as if we a had home field advantage because of all the CARQUEST colors and associates," car owner and CARQUEST store owner Rollie Helmling said. "This year we're racing during the Craftsman Truck race, but we still expect a lot of CARQUEST support from the St. Louis area."
The Andretti-Helmling Racing Silver Bullet car made its 2000 debut at the last USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet event, April 8th in Nazareth, Pa. Despite a new driver in 19-year-old Bud Kaedling, the CARQUEST team still finished 18th after starting 29th.
"We were happy with our Nazareth finish," Helmling said. "There were a lot of incidents during that race, but Bud raced smart and stayed away from the crashes. We're a team with a new young driver and getting laps under his belts is our top priority. If he can stay out of incidents we feel we'll be in good shape at the end of the race."
Practice at Gateway on Saturday, May 6 is slated from 9 - 9:55 a.m. and 11 a.m. - noon. Pole qualifying begins at 12:30 p.m. and a 15-lap qualifying race gets under way at 4:30 p.m. Sunday's 80-lap (100-mile) race is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2 (4:30 p.m. Eastern).
Ticket information for the weekend, which also includes the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, is available by calling the track at 888-827-7333.
