George Snider hopes to follow hot on the heels of Dynamics, Inc. and Steve Lewis as the newest all-time leaders in terms of USAC National car owner feature winners. His next chance to do that comes March 21-23 during the 26th "Copper World Classic" weekend at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway.
Snider is tied with Bob Hampshire with 14 career USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown wins as a car owner and a victory at Phoenix would put him at the head of the list. Jay Drake will drive a car at Phoenix entered by Stewart-Snider Racing, while a second Snider car is expected to be entered with a yet-to-be-announced driver. Dynamics, Inc. became USAC's all-time leading Sprint Car winner and Lewis became USAC's all-time National Midget Car winner, both during 2002.
Included among Snider's 14 victories are wins at eight different tracks. He has three wins each at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, two each at Sacramento, Calif. and Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio plus wins at Orlando, Fla., Milwaukee, Wisc., Las Vegas, Nev. (dirt track) and in the 1998 "Copper World Classic" at Phoenix. Drivers involved in Snider's total wins include George himself (3), Jimmy Sills (3), Tony Stewart (3), Mike Bliss (3), J.J. Yeley and Jason Leffler.
The 100-mile race will precede Sunday's "Purex/Dial Indy 200" Indy Racing League event at the 1-mile paved oval. A 25-lap USAC National/Western Midget Car and 100-mile Infiniti Pro Series race are planned Saturday, with practice and qualifying slated for Friday at the Desert Mile.
Drake is expected to be among drivers race fans will have the chance to meet during Thursday night's (March 20) Tempe Speedfest at Tempe Beach Park, located on the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, Ariz. The affair is scheduled from 5-9:30 pm and includes an autograph session with drivers from all competing series. Live entertainment and numerous inter-active multi-sensory activities are planned as part of the festival atmosphere, with proceeds benefiting the Hemophilia Association.
