Fitzgerald wins "Rocky Mountain" debut at SLC

Dave Fitzgerald of Salt Lake City, Utah, who won nine USAC Supermodified races in his hometown in the mid-1980s, captured Saturday night's 40-lap USAC/SLVRA Port-O-Call Rocky Mountain Sprint Car Series opener at Rocky Mountain Raceways.

Driving the Hamblin Furniture/Ramco Chevy/Eagle, Fitzgerald led all but two laps to beat fast qualifier Rick Pardee, Chuck Maddox, Jim Waters and Ryan Burdett to the checkered flag.

Waters led the first lap, then Fitzgerald led the rest, except for lap 37 when Maddox slipped in front.

Pardee emerged as the new series point leader by two points over Fitzgerald going into a May 26 race at the 3/8-mile paved oval. Saturday night's race was one of nine slated at Salt Lake City, with three additional series events scheduled in Idaho.
