Ryan Newman Claims 5th, USAC Championship In Sight
Irwindale, CA - Ryan Newman heads into the last race of the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet season at Memphis next week with a 59-point lead. With only 66 points available, Newman is on his way to clinching his first USAC championship. Newman's 5th-place finish on Saturday at Irwindale Speedway helped extend his points lead over Russ Gamester in the running of the "Silver Bullet 100."
Newman was 5th fastest in practice before qualifying. After qualifying, Newman was wowed with his quick time. "I picked up a lot of time from the time we practiced. I'm impressed, because I don't know where it came from," Newman explains. Newman had qualified his #14 machine on the pole, just .006 faster than the 2nd place qualifier.
Starting straight up from qualifying, Newman got a good jump on the field and led the first 7 laps. From then on, Newman was working on getting adjusted to the car, which had loosened up. Newman fell back to 7th place at one point, but worked his way back and finished a strong 5th. "We weren't the best tonight, but we managed to survive. It was a bad break for (Russ) Gamester. He definitely had a faster car, but he broke and it gives us a good cushion going into the last race," Newman said.
Newman has this weekend off from Silver Crown action, but is racing at Winchester Speedway in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Series, as well as the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series. Newman returns to the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series in the season finale at Memphis Motorsports Park on October 31st.
Ryan Newman began racing quarter midgets at the incredibly young age of 4 1/2 years. With over 200 quarter midget victories and two Quarter Midget National Championships to his credit, Newman is a member of the Quarter Midget Hall of Fame.
Since graduating to midgets, Newman has garnered Rookie of the Year awards on the AAMS, USAC National Midget and USAC Silver Crown series, as well as the 1993 AAMS National Championship.
Away from the track, Ryan is an interdisciplinary engineering student at Purdue University, where he is on track to graduate in May 2000.
