J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. extended his all-time USAC single-season victory record to 22 Friday night, winning the 30-lap USAC National Sprint Car race at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. The win set him up as an odds-on favorite for the upcoming September 19-20 "Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora," the next event on the 2003 USAC Sprint Car calendar.
The $1,000,000 Eldora race, a USAC Sprint Car "special event," will not alter the National standings, but will offer participants the largest purse in Sprint Car racing history - with $200,000 to the winner and $10,000 just to start the 40-lap A-Main. Qualifying and prelims are slated at the 1/2-mile Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on Friday night, September 19 and the main events will be conducted on Saturday night.
Yeley and his Tony Stewart Racing/Mopar Twister/Mopar led wire-to-wire to win the Joliet 30-lapper, beating Boston Reid, Levi Jones, Jay Drake and Jon Stanbrough. The win was J.J.'s 12th in National Sprint racing this season and 25th of his career, tying him for 11th in that USAC career list with Parnelli Jones, Steve Butler and Tony Elliott.
Tracy Hines was Friday's Road to Indy fastest qualifier at Joliet but was 14th in the race finish.
The next USAC National Sprint Car race is the "Fall Harvest Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track on October 4.
A total of 150 entries have been received for the "Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora," some of those listed awaiting driver assignments.
