Fitzgerald Takes SLC Opener, Series Continues Saturday

Dave Fitzgerald of Salt Lake City, Utah is the early leader in the 2004 USAC Port O'Call Rocky Mountain Sprint Car Series standing after winning Saturday night's 40-lap series opener at Rocky Mountain Raceways in the Utah capital.

Fitzgerald and his Hamblin's Furniture Frames/Thriller Mfg. Special grabbed the lead from Jeff Bergener on the seventh lap and led the rest of the way in his Kerry Hamblin machine to beat Chuck Maddox, Mike Baisch, Dave Adamson and Paul Marconi. The win left Fitzgerald with a two-point lead over Maddox in the standings entering this Saturday night's races at RMR.

Defending series champion Jim Waters was Saturday night's fastest qualifier. Jeff Bergener won the dash and first heat, while Fitzgerald won the second heat. In the feature, Ray Bergener led the first lap and Jeff led laps 2-6 before Fitzgerald assumed command.
