Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. won Friday night's "Showdown at Sundown" USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway and will be among favorites when the series competes as part of this weekend's "Rocky Mountain Classic" at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.
McCord took the lead at the start of Friday's 60-lap race and led for 13 laps, then regained it from Michael Lewis on lap 29. The race was halted at lap 30, as planned, for a short "work" break, then resumed, with McCord leading the rest of the way in his Hat World/Lids Beast/Chevy. Brian Tyler finished second ahead of Dave Steele, Bobby Santos and J.J. Yeley.
Saturday's "Rocky Mountain Classic" timetable at PPIR has practice starting at 9 am and qualifying beginning at 1 pm. A Midget and Sprint car "qualifying race" are also slated Saturday. Sunday's schedule has warm-ups beginning at 2 pm and the Silver Crown "qualifying race" at 3. The 30-mile Midget feature starts at 4:45, followed by the 30-mile Sprint car feature and the 100-mile Weld Racing Silver Crown race. Midway concerts and a spectacular 9:15 pm fireworks display conclude the weekend activity.
Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. leads the series standings going into this weekend's events in Colorado. Tracy Hines won last year's "Rocky Mountain Classic" Sprint feature but Drake's qualifying run last year established an all-time World's Record for Sprint cars of 144.951 mph! Drake was the fastest qualifier at Richmond but finished ninth in the 60-lap race.
