USAC DRIVERS TEST AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY IN PREPARATION FOR
JUNE 26-27 OPEN-WHEEL WEEKEND
SunTrust Indy Challenge IndyCar Series Race Headlines Tripleheader
Richmond, VA (June 8, 2009)--Several USAC drivers tested their open-wheel cars at Richmond International Raceway today in preparation for the IndyCar Series/USAC Series tripleheader weekend at America's Premier Short Track, Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27.
RW Motorsports and Tony Stewart Racing unloaded this morning to bright and sunny skies at the ¾-mile track. Jerry Coons, Jr., Shane Hmiel, Dave Darland, Tracy Hines and Levi Jones piloted their 800-horsepower machines to find the right setup when they return at the end of the month.
Fans who have been to Richmond International Raceway for a USAC race know how exciting the on-track action can be. But for fans who haven't had a chance to catch the open-wheel racers, the drivers tell the story.
"(The fans) are going to see some fast race cars," said Hines. "I think our USAC Sprint Cars go around here in 19 seconds, which is very fast--I think three or four seconds faster than the (NASCAR Sprint) Cup cars. We're fast, the cars are very competitive, and you'll see two-wide racing pretty much the whole race."
"Richmond is one of the coolest places we come," said Tony Stewart Racing's Levi Jones. "We're here with the IndyCars and there's usually a pretty good crowd. It's a really great race track and we can run two- and three-wide.
"To watch a 1,200-pound car with 800 horsepower go around a ¾-mile race track with no down force is pretty exciting," said Coons. "We're running around here at 150 to 160 mph, so you'll see cars crossed up going into the corners, side-by-side, wheel-to-wheel with no fenders to bang off of. So it makes for pretty exciting racing."
The drivers will compete in the USAC Sprint Car Series Rotondo Weirich Showdown on Friday, June 26, "under the lights." Friday's ticket includes admission to NBC12 Pole Qualifying for the IndyCar Series, as well as an autograph session with all of the IndyCar Series drivers. Tickets are $15 and children 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult.
The USAC Silver Crown Series takes the track on Saturday, June 27, for the James River Grounds 100 race. Saturday's ticket includes a seat for the main event--the SunTrust Indy Challenge IndyCar Series race. Danica Patrick, 2009 Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves, defending series champion Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon and the rest of the IndyCar Series drivers will reach speeds of 180 mph. Tickets are $35 (reserved) and $30 (general admission) and can be purchased by logging on to www.rir.com or calling 866-455-RACE (7223). Children 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult in general admission sections.
