Peter Shepherd Returns to His Short Track Roots
Memphis, Tenn. -- June 20, 2006 -- Peter Shepherd will return to his roots this weekend when the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K&N visits the ¾ mile Richmond International Raceway paved oval. Shepherd grew up racing on short tracks in Southern Ontario, Canada.
"Short track racing is what I grew up on," smiled the USAC rookie. "This will be another test for me going from running two 1.5 mile tracks to a ¾ mile track. I will have to drive a little more free at Richmond."
Richmond is the second smallest track that the series will race on this season. While Peter Shepherd may be a veteran of short track racing, he is still a rookie in the USAC Silver Crown Series.
"I know most of the other guys have run a lot of Silver Crown races at Richmond," said Shepherd. "That will give them the advantage but that is something we have dealt with every week. Because these guys have done this for a long time and they are phenomenal racecar drivers. I am proud to have an opportunity to race with all of these guys."
While Richmond might be new to Peter Shepherd, it is not new to Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing. The team has competed at the facility for the past five seasons, scoring a top five finish in 2003 with Tyler Walker behind the wheel. Early this spring, the team took Shepherd up the road from their shop to test at Memphis Motorsports Park in their 2003 J&J Silver Crown chassis. Richmond and Memphis have similar layouts.
SCHOOL IS IN
Having come from a stock car background, Peter Shepherd's first open wheel experience was the test in Memphis this past spring. Since then, he has been learning and growing as a driver. Last weekend at Kentucky, Shepherd scored another top eight finish in his second start in the USAC Silver Crown Series.
"As a driver, I stepped up my game from Homestead," said Shepherd. "Now we expect to step it up more for Richmond. If we can keep doing what we are doing and bring it home in one piece, I think the results will be there."
Team Manager Chris Santucci has been coaching the young Canadian since his first race with the team at Homestead. Last weekend at Kentucky, team owner Carl Edwards also offered advice.
"It was great," beamed Shepherd. "I learned a lot and started passing cars. I felt so comfortable. I think that maybe I am bringing myself up to the level that the team is at now and once we are at the top of the peak, I think we are going to make some noise."
TEAM LOOKING TO MOVE UP IN POINTS
The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team is looking to move up in the points this weekend with a strong finish in the "Richmond Times-Dispatch 100." The team is currently 5th in owner's points. Peter Shepherd is 11th in driver points despite driving in only two of the four races this season. Richmond marks the 100th entry into a Silver Crown race since the team began racing full time in 2000.
The USAC Silver Crown Series race is scheduled to go green around 5:45pm eastern just prior to the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series race later that evening. The Richmond race is one of seven events this season where the series will share the same track on the same weekend as the IRL or NASCAR.
