Defending 2-time Stoops Freightliner/USAC National Sprint Car Champion Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich, captured Sunday's thrilling "Desert Star Classic" 25-miler at the 1-mile paved Phoenix (Ariz) International Raceway, beating Dave Steele to the checkered flag after a spirited late-race-duel.

Tyler is sixth in the standings going into this weekend's back-to-back races in the Kansas City area. Lakeside Speedway, in Kansas City, Kans. hosts Friday night's events, while I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. serves as Saturday night's venue. Practice at both 1/2 mile paved ovals starts at 5:45 p.m. with qualifying at 7 and racing at 8. A 30-lap feature caps each night's program. Drivers will be aiming at the late Robbie Stanley's Lakeside record of 16.612 seconds, while Tony Stewart holds the I-70 record of 14.453 seconds.

Steele's Saturday speed of 144.167 mph established a new all-time non-winged record, putting him on the pole for Sunday's Phoenix race and netting him the Turbines, Inc. Checkered flag award. He led 19 of the 25 laps but let Tyler slip by in traffic on the final lap and had to settle for second. Brad Armstrong, Billy Puterbaugh, Jr. and Jay Drake rounded out the "top-five" as Tyler averaged a record 136.373 mph in his Settle Excavating/Loggers, Inc. Special.

Defending Phoenix race winner Chet Fillip was never a factor after spinning on the initial race start. He ended up ninth, while Kevin Thomas, who dropped out late in the 25-miler, retained the series point lead by four points over Steele going into the Kansas City events.

Ray Evans of Salt Lake City, Utah suffered a shoulder bruise and concussion in a Friday practice crash at PIR. He continues to lead the "Western States" Sprint car standings going into this Saturday night's Sprint/Midget doubleheader at Las Vegas (Nev) Motor Speedway.
