USAC STARS TONY HUNT AND JOSH WISE TO COMPETE IN CRUZ PEDREGON'S MIDGETS AT TURKEY NIGHT
INDIANAPOLIS (November 21, 2007) -- Cruz Pedregon's USAC midget racing team has their sights set on Victory Lane at Thursday night's, "Turkey Night Grand Prix" USAC National/Western Midget race at Irwindale Speedway.USAC Sprint Car Champion, Josh Wise and five-time USAC Champion, Tony Hunt will pilot Pedregon's Advance Auto Parts/Q/Snap-on sponsored, Toyota powered midgets at the 67th running of this legendary midget race. This year's event will feature 98-laps of racing, in honor of the late J.C. Agajanian, the patriarch of the famed California racing family and long-time USAC race organizer.
"We are just thrilled that two of the best midget drivers in the country, Wise and Hunt, will be competing for us at the Turkey Night Grand Prix," said NHRA Funny Car driver and midget team owner, Cruz Pedregon. "Winning this prestigious race would be a great victory for our team especially considering the talented drivers that will be here from Tony Stewart's team, Kasey Kahn's team and others that are proven USAC winners."
Hunt, a third generation driver from the famous Hunt racing family, is accustomed to winning. He won 45 USAC feature events and sat on the pole 54 times. His grandfather owned Indy cars and sprint cars for more than 30 years and his father raced sprint cars and midgets until his retirement in 1982.JJThe Turkey Night Grand Prix represents Hunt's first time behind the wheel for Pedregon.
"I'm really excited to be running for Cruz's midget racing team," said Tony Hunt. "I've had an alignment with the Toyota dealership in Northern California for the past four years and now running in Cruz's Toyota powered midgets, it brings the Toyota relationship full circle."
Hunt will team up with Pedregon's regular driver, Josh Wise, a multi-time midget feature winner and 2006 USAC Sprint Car Champion.
"I think Josh and I can both benefit from each other just on the knowledge and experience we have in pavement midget racing," said Hunt. "And we've both been in the whole environment of racing with teammates, so we know how to handle it and make it a benefit rather than a competitive thing.A win by either one of us would be great for the whole program."
Wise and Hunt will have plenty of stout company for the late-season race. The Turkey Night Grand Prix is one of the racing season highlights for local race fans and those fans traveling across the country- they enjoy a home-cooked turkey meal by day followed by an evening of racing. The event is equally popular with racing competitors with 49 National / Western Midget entries for the event received by the Speedway (as of November 19). Tony Stewart Racing will field three drivers and NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Kasey Kahne's program will field another. Davey Hamilton, who finished in 9th place in this years Indianapolis 500 will have an entry. Other notable drivers include NASCAR Busch Series driver and 2004 USAC National Midget champion Bobby East as well as National Midget points leader Jerry Coons Jr., a part-time competitor for Cruz Pedregon Racing.
