Dave Steele, Tracy Hines notch top-five finishes at Copper World Classic

Dave Steele and Tracy Hines earned two top-five finishes in the USAC National Midget Car Series portion of the Copper World Classic held at Phoenix International Raceway over the weekend. Josh Wise also posted an impressive top-ten finish. After rain washed out qualifying, USAC made the decision to create the feature lineup based on practice speeds, which were recorded on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 2 Nicholas Motorsports team found themselves in the fourth row as the green flag dropped on the 25-lap feature event. Steele stayed near the front throughout the event, working his way up through traffic to finish in the fourth position. Hines and the No. 11 Wilke-PAK Motorsports team started the race in third position and followed it up with a solid fifth-place run.

Wise earned his first top-10 finish of the season, bringing the No. 20 Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises machine to the checkered flag in eighth place. Wise, who is campaigning for the USAC "Triple Crown" title this season, overcame an eleventh-place starting position.

Of the 32-car starting field, 14 entries boasted Mopar powerplants. At the conclusion of the USAC National Midget Car Series feature event, drivers utilizing Mopar engines had captured two of the top-five finishing positions and six of the top-10 finishing spots.

Drake and Wise kick off 2005 USAC Silver Crown season

The Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises duo of Jay Drake and Josh Wise battled back to finish the USAC National Silver Crown Series portion of the Copper World Classic in 16th and 27th position. Drake and the No. 22 fought back to a 16th-place finish, after having to change rear tires due to excess wear. Wise was credited with a 27th-place finish after suffering an ignition box failure on lap 78. The No. 10 machine had been running third before dropping off the racetrack.

Evernham Motorsports' Erin Crocker and her Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Kraig Kinser were credited with an 18th-place finish and 28th-place finish, respectively. The event marked the first outing for the pair, who normally compete in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series. The Copper World Classic also marked the first pavement event for both drivers.

Hoffman Racing's Eric Gordon brought the No. 69 Mopar-powered machine across the finish line in 10th place for the team's first outing under Mopar power. Six teams starting the USAC National Silver Crown Series portion of the Copper World Classic utilized Mopar power, collecting one top-five finish and two top-10 feature event finishes.
