Silver Crown Cars Return To Milwaukee Mile

The Milwaukee Mile, one of America's most revered ovals, plays host to the Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225 this weekend, with the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Cars and National Midget Cars sharing the weekend at the 1-mile paved oval with the Indy Racing League and Menards Infiniti Pro Series.

It's the first appearance of USAC at the storied track in 11 years. Mike Bliss (Silver Crown) and Stan Fox (Midget) were the winners in the 1993 "doubleheader," which produced some spectacular competition. The same is expected this weekend with a 25-mile Midget and 100-mile Silver Crown feature on tap on Saturday afternoon.

Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. leads the Weld Racing Silver Crown contingent to Milwaukee, 80 points ahead of Jason McCord in the latest standings. Steele broke Mario Andretti's long-standing record for consecutive series laps led at the start of this season, leading the first 290 laps of competition, winning races at Phoenix, Ariz. and Memphis, Tenn. He now ranks fifth in the all-time series lap leader list.

Steele also won the pole for the first three races of the season, bringing his career total to 15, second all-time behind Jimmy Sills' 21. He and the others will be aiming for Eric Gordon's 1-lap series record of 122.541 mph. when qualifications are conducted on Friday. Gordon also returns to the track where he scored his only series triumph in 1990, establishing the 100-mile race record of 107.370 mph.

Silver Crown practice is slated Friday from 9:15-10 am and a practice/qualifying session is scheduled between 12:15 and 1:45 pm. A Silver Crown warm-up from 9-9:15 am Saturday precedes the 100-mile feature at 3:30 pm. The 25-mile Midget race is scheduled for a 2:30 pm start.

Dave Darland, Brian Tyler, Bobby East and Jay Drake also own 2004 USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown victories and will join Steele and Gordon in this weekend's field.

George Snider, who won the first USAC Silver Crown race at Milwaukee in 1988, is also returning this weekend as a car owner. He and NASCAR star Tony Stewart field the car for Jay Drake, the most recent series winner, at Pikes Peak International Raceway on July 4.
