SACRAMENTO, CA (October 9) -- Kasey Kahne moved closer to the Oliver Trucking Rookie of the Year award Saturday by finishing seventh in the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series race at the CalExpo State Fairgrounds. Kahne, who started inside the second row, followed fellow rookie Bud Kaeding across the finish line in the 100-mile race, which was shortened to 83 due to California's midnight curfew. "We started third and fell back to seventh," Kasey said. "The track got slower and slower through the corners. Our engine wasn't running in the bottom end and we had a tough time battling that." Kahne, the leading candidate for the Oliver Trucking Rookie of the Year award, has raced in 10 of 12 events and still ranks 10th in the standings, only 10 points behind Paul White. Kahne led the $5,000-to-win Northern Auto Racing Club winged sprint car race, but fell behind eventual winner Peter Murphy during the 10th lap. Kasey finished second, ahead of Sparky Howard. "I should have won that race," Kahne said. "I caught a lapped car and tried to pass him on the outside, but it was too slippery up there. I spun my tires and I ended up getting passed. You had to stay on the bottom. If I hadn't pulled out, I'd have probably won." Kahne will compete with the Coors Light Silver Bullet Series again Saturday, this time on pavement at Irwindale Speedway. The 100-lap, 50-mile race will be taped by ESPN2 and aired October 22nd between 10 p.m. and midnight eastern time. "We're going to have to work on the car quite a bit this week," Kasey said. "We haven't raced on pavement in a while. "I wanted to get lots of experience with USAC this year and we're getting it. We're racing different cars on dirt and pavement."
