KNOXVILLE, IOWA (April 21, 2001) - 1997 National Sprint Car Poll "Rookie of the Year" Brandon "Bud" Kaeding of Campbell, Calif., has filed the first entry for the June 1-2 "NAPA 100" at Knoxville Raceway for the United States Auto Club (USAC) Coors Light Silver Bullet Series. Kaeding, aboard Rollie Helmling's Carquest-sponsored dirt championship car, will try to best his tenth place finish in last year's Silver Bullet Series classic.
Other entries have been received from drivers Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla., Robby Flock of Murrieta, Calif., Jerry Coons, Jr., of Tucson, Ariz., Johnny Parsons, Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind., and Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind. Gamester finished sixth in last June's event, while Flock and Coons were 17th and 23rd, respectively. Parsons finished sixth in the only other USAC-sanctioned dirt championship car race ever held on the Marion County Fairgrounds oval in June of 1981.
Additional entries, without drivers listed, have been officially submitted by owners D.Guiducci/6R Racing, R.E. Technologies LLC, and Bob East/Tony Stewart. Last year's 100- lapper, held in conjunction with the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction weekend in Knoxville, was won by open-wheel sensation Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif., and featured such dirt track stars as J.J. Yeley (2nd), Kasey Kahne (3rd), Jack Hewitt (5th), Dave Darland (9th), Ryan Newman (14th), Brett Hearn (15th), Brad Noffsinger (22nd), and Jimmy Sills (25th). It is expected that this year's race will also feature a number of surprise nationally-known talents from throughout the world of dirt-track open-wheel racing due to the exposure provided by the Lingner Group Production's tape-delayed broadcast on ESPN2.
Those seeking more information on the June 1-2 USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series "NAPA 100" are urged to call Knoxville Raceway at 641-842-5431, while those wanting information on the induction weekend should call the museum at 641-842-6176. Both the ninth annual "Goodyear Masters Classic" 360-cubic-inch sprint car race for drivers age fifty and over on Friday, June 1, and the track's regular winged 410 c.i. sprints on Saturday, June 2, will compete at Knoxville in conjunction with the USAC events.
