Jack Hewitt, injured in Monday night's USAC Sprint car race at North Vernon, Ind., has been upgraded to "serious but stable" condition at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital.

Jack, winner of 76 USAC National feature events during his career, suffered a neck injury and is scheduled for neck surgery Friday afternoon. He remains in the hospital's critical care unit but has made dramatic daily improvement and is in great spirits.

He is conscious and talking to family members and doctors and is responding to all treatment.

USAC's Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" continues Thursday at Lawrenceburg Speedway and concludes with Friday, Saturday and Sunday night races at Bloomington, Terre Haute and Kokomo respectively.
