Kenny Irwin Jr. won the Dupont 100 at Indianapolis Raceway Park on wednesday night. Irwin inherited the lead on lap 80 when Tony Stewart was collected by Jay Drake who had just hit the turn four wall and bounced into the path of the leader. Stewart led from the drop of the green, lapping all but three cars. Stewart had pulled out a lead of over fifteen seconds over the second place car of Russ Gamester.
Kenny Irwin's night looked like it might end early as the car wouldn't produce any power when it took to the track for its first qualifying lap. The crew thought they had solved the problem but the team's woes continued as the attempt at a second lap produced the same results.
Irwin's crew found the culprit in a collapsed fuel line which was replaced in time for Irwin to line up last for the second qualifying race. Irwin finished fourth in his qualifying race earning him a last row starting position for the 100 lap feature.
In the first qualifying race, Mike Mosely Jr. hit the wall in turn four bringing out the yellow before the first lap could be scored. Jason Leffler won the first qualifier followed by Jason McCord, Ronnie Burke, Andy Michner and in fifth, Joe Gosek.
The second qualifier was won by Donnie Beechler over Doug Kalita and Bentley Warren in third.
Pre-race favorite, Jimmy Sills, broke the front U-joint on the drive shaft which moved around enough to cut the fuel line. Sills' car burst into flames but was quickly extinguished by track safety crews. Sills suffered burns to his lower legs and the car was finished for the evening.
