Steele-Tomassi team rakes in record $60,280 at IRP!
Point leader Darland wins at Anderson.
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. and car owner Dino Tomassi of Fremont, Calif. earned an all-time USAC Midget Car racing record purse of $60,280 for their "sweep" of Friday night's "Indianapolis Twin 25s" presented by Ford at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Steele caught Aaron Fike on the 19th lap of the first 25-lapper and led the final seven laps in his Mopar Parts/Finish Line Towing Mopar/Beast to beat Aaron Fike, J.J. Yeley, A.J. Fike and Darland. Starting 22nd in the second 25-lapper, Steele moved to third by lap five and passed Darland for the lead on lap 12. Darland finished second, followed by Tracy Hines, Bobby East and A.J. Fike.
Steele's prize money included a $50,000 bonus posted by Prolong Super Lubricants for any driver who could win both 25-lappers, plus $5,000 in first-place money, a $2,500 bonus for earning the most feature event points and $1,580 in lap prizes from Racer Magazine and $1,200 in fast qualifier awards from "Road to Indy" and Turbines, Inc.
Darland came back to lead all 40 laps of Saturday night's race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway in his Ford/ASE/Performance Racing Industry Pink Ford/Beast to beat Tracy Hines, Bobby East, fast qualifier J.J. Yeley and Aaron Fike. The win left Darland 151 points ahead of Yeley in the new series standings going into an October 19 race at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Va.
