"THIEL MEMORIAL CLASSIC" FRIDAY AT BEAVER DAM; SWINDELL TAKES 62ND TOYOTA "NIGHT BEFORE THE 500;" KAHNE TEAM LEADS "TOYOTA CHALLENGE" STANDINGS

The USAC National Midget Car Series heads for its initial appearance at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, Wisc. Friday night and the 6th Annual Mid-State Equipment "Sue Thiel Memorial Classic" features a tight battle for the USAC point lead.

Defending USAC National Champion Jerry Coons Jr. trails Darren Hagen by only seven points going into the race on the 1/2-mile dirt oval. Coons won last year's "Thiel Memorial Classic."

Brad Kuhn, last year's BMARA Midget Champ, finished second in last year's Dodge County race and he currently ranks 10th in the USAC National points.

Both need to keep an eye on Kevin Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn. Swindell led all 50 laps to win Saturday night's 62nd Toyota "Night Before the 500" classic at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind. The victory came in the second of three "Toyota Challenge" races and gave his Kasey Kahne Racing Team the lead in the challenge standings going into the three-race finale June 16 at O.R.P. Kahne cars, driven by Swindell and Brady Bacon, rank 1-2 in the updated "Toyota Challenge" standings. The champion gets $15,000 from the posted awards of $25,000.

Swindell and his Mopar/Team ASE Beast were trailed at O.R.P. by Bobby Santos III, Billy Wease, Bobby East and Kyle Nicholas.
