Ryan Newman Takes Checkers in Kenyon Classic

Indianapolis, IN - Ryan Newman took his second victory of the week by winning the "Mel Kenyon Classic" at Indianapolis Raceway Park Wednesday evening. The win was Ryan's fourth win this season in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Car Series. Newman had led the way at the USAC Sprint Car race on Sunday at Winchester Speedway.

Newman qualified the Chuck Lewis-owned car 2nd fastest and was able to win his heat race, as well. Luck would play a factor in Newman's feature race, as Newman was able to adjust the car under two caution periods to neutralize it. Those cautions also allowed Newman to catch up to the leader, who had pulled away significantly. On the 2nd restart, Ryan was able to take over the lead and keep it throughout the remaining laps.

Newman admitted, "We had a lucky night. Those two yellows really worked in our favor. I was able to make some beneficial changes to fine-tune the car under the two cautions. If it hadn't been for the cautions, I would've never been able to catch him (Jason Leffler)."

The victory also earned Newman the coveted Wynn's Challenge bonus of $6,500. "I want to thank Brayton Engineering. This is a brand new motor we have and it won the first time," Newman stated.

With the win, Newman sits in 2nd in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Series with 238 points, with a 79-point deficit to the leader. He currently sits atop the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series standings, 32 points ahead of the nearest competitor.

Newman's victory can be seen on ESPN2 Saturday night (August 21st) at 8:30PM EST. Ryan Newman takes to the track this weekend at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL contesting in the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series and he will also be racing on Sunday in the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series at Salem Speedway in Salem, IN. The next USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Car race will be August 29th at Pikes Peak International Raceway.
