McCord wins IRP thriller; Hines "just misses" #11
Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. emerged with a thrilling victory in Saturday night's "Turbines, Inc. Sprint Challenge" at Indianapolis Raceway Park, passing leaders Brian Tyler and Dave Steele on the final lap for the win.
McCord trailed Tyler and Steele entering the third turn on the final lap but used the high groove to maneuver past both for the eventual victory in his Hat World/Lids Chevy/Beast. Steele finished second and Tyler was third ahead of Ed Carpenter and Eric Gordon.
Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. narrowly missed a record-tying 11th IRP victory in the 30-lap feature. He was leading when Kevin Feeney spun but was forced to the pits with an oil leak and retired from the race setting up the dramatic last-lap finish. A victory would have tied Mike Bliss' IRP record of 11 USAC triumphs.
Hines emerged from the race with a 66-point lead over Derek Davidson in the new Stoops Freightliner standings going into the June 19-22 "Buckeye Nationals" at four Ohio tracks. Davidson won Saturday night's semi and finished seventh in the feature.
Aaron Fike, Dave Darland and Levi Jones won Saturday night's heat races at IRP.
