57th "Night Before The 500" classic Saturday at IRP. Lincoln Park's "Put 100" postponed by sink holes.
Heavy rains which created sink holes in the Lincoln Park Speedway track surface led to postponement of Saturday night's scheduled "Put 100" USAC National Midget Car race at the Putnamville, Ind. dirt track. Track and USAC officials are discussing possible dates for rescheduling the event.
The USAC National Midget Car Series now prepares for this Saturday night's 57th annual "Night Before the 500" Classic at Indianapolis Raceway Park. A 50-lap feature concludes the racing action on the .686-mile paved oval.
Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash. has won the last two "Night Before' feature events and would be the first driver to win three in a row since Jimmy Davies in 1960-61-62 if he should win Saturday. He will team with defending series champion Dave Darland, 2001 Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Champ J.J. Yeley and young Bobby East as part of a four-car Steve Lewis Team entry.
Darland and Yeley trail point leader Dave Steele by only 11 and 17 points respectively in the National Midget Car Series standings going into the IRP events.
Saturday's timetable has Midget practice at 6:10 pm and qualifying at 7. The first of two 12-lap "qualifying races" starts at 8:30.
Drivers will be aiming at Chris Shultz' 1-lap track qualifying record of 121.219 mph set in 1997, while Kenneth Nichols established the 50-lap race record of 110.516 mph in 1992.
