Friday night's Golden "Hoosier Hundred" at the Indiana State Fairgrounds will celebrate 50 years of exciting USAC Championship racing at the storied 1-mile dirt oval. The 100-lap feature, continuing a tradition dating back to 1953, is scheduled to start at 8 pm, following practice at 4:30 and qualifying at 5:30. A 15-mile "qualifying race" gets the green flag at 7 pm.

Saluting the Hulman-George Family, the race showcases the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship Cars in their initial 2002 appearance on dirt. Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. is the series point leader after winning the opening race at Phoenix, Ariz. in March. Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. trails him by nine points going into Friday night's event.

Former "Hoosier Hundred" race winners expected to compete include defending two-time winner Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind., who will be trying to become the first driver to win three straight since Al Unser won four in a row from 1970-1973. Dave Darland, the 1995 & 1996 winner, is also entered, as is 1986-88-89 winner Jack Hewitt.

Page Jones, who competed in the 1994 "Hoosier Hundred," has been selected to serve as Grand Marshal for the race. Page's father Parnelli, winner of the 1963 Indianapolis 500, also won the Hoosier Hundred in 1962.

Johnny Parsons, whose rim-riding performance in last year's race remains a topic of discussion a year later, is also entered for Friday night's race. He holds the 1-lap track qualifying record of 114.726 mph set in 1995. Last year he came from 21st starting position to lead 31 laps before slipping to fifth at the checkered flag.
