Steele leads Midgets to Cedar Rapids Friday.

Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla., winner of Sunday's USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race at Winchester, Ind., also leads the USAC National Midget Car Series standings as the series heads for Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Friday night's "Hawkeye Open-Wheel Classic" at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

Steele holds a 20-point lead over defending series champion Dave Darland after the first three events of the 2002 season, two of which Dave has won!

Drivers will be aiming at Tracy Hines' 1-lap track qualifying record of 101.237 mph when the Midgets take to the 1/2-mile paved oval Friday. Practice commences at 4:30 pm and qualifying starts at 6. The first race is at 7 and the feature events for each series are 30 laps.

Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind., winner of the 25-mile feature at Nazareth, Pa. April 21, is also among early entries, as is Davenport, Iowa's Davey Ray, who finished 17th in last year's USAC National Midget Car points, and the Fike brothers, Aaron and A.J. of Galesburg, Ill.
