East-Yeley point battle spices Cedar Rapids Midgets

Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. will be out to protect his lead in the USAC National Midget Car standings in Friday night's Advance Auto Parts "Doubleheader" presented by Papa John's at the 1/2-mile paved Hawkeye Downs oval in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

East was the fastest qualifier for last year's Cedar Rapids USAC Sprint Car race and finished second to J.J. Yeley in last year's Cedar Rapids Midget feature. He leads Yeley by just three points in the current series standings.

Practice for Friday night's event, which also feature the USAC Sprint Cars, starts t 6 pm, with qualifying at 7 and racing at 8. Each feature event is 30 laps.

Yeley and Tracy Hines, who ranks fourth in the current series points, are each trying to secure a USAC National Midget title in 2003 to join Tony Stewart, Pancho Carter and Dave Darland as USAC "Triple Crown" Champions. Both Yeley and Hines already own USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car championships.
