STARS, STAR GAZERS TO COME OUT AT VENTURA'S FALL CLASSIC
VENTURA, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2009) -- Saturday's ARP presents the J.W. Mitchell Fall Classic at Ventura Raceway will be, among other things, a night of science unparalleled in the Raceway's history.
Science? At a racetrack? Science, as in white lab coats, magnifying glasses and specimen slides? Those kinds of sciences?
Absolutely. The grandstands will be filled with astronomers (on hand to see a gathering of dirt track racing stars), pedologists (because, after all, the stars will be racing on dirt) and raceologists (folks who study racing).
And make no mistake about it; the stars of dirt track midget car racing will be out in force when the competition begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Raceway.
Brad Kuhn, the USAC's National Midget Car Series points leader, told a national television audience over the weekend that he planned to race at Ventura and try to win the $5,000 winner's share of the Classic's purse. Drivers from around the nation have expressed the same idea to Raceway promoter Jim Naylor recently.
There has been no bigger midget racing star than Costa Mesa's Ron 'Sleepy' Tripp and Tripp will serve as the Grand Marshal of the event.
The Classic is a points race for USAC's Western Midget Car Series. Manhattan Beach flash Garrett Hansen leads the Western standings. Cory Kruseman and Matt Mitchell, nephew of J.W. Mitchell, won the two USAC Western midget races at Ventura this season.
The Fall Classic will include the USAC Ford Focus Midget Dirt National tour and the USAC Junior Focus Midgets. The champion of the national Ford Focus Midget series will be crowned and the same is true for USAC's California Dirt Ford Focus Series.
Brody Roa leads the state tour standings but Cody Swanson has a mathematical chance to grab the championship.
