The USAC Indiana Ford Focus Midget Series will be familiar territory for fans of USAC Midget Car Racing. The series features cars and names that any fan of USAC Midget Car racing will instantly recognize.
The opening round of the Indiana Focus Series at Anderson Speedway April 6 was won by the number 2 Focus Midget of long time USAC car owner Greg Steele, with Tony Ave at the wheel. Steele and Ave were not only names fans will know as the field showcased other names long associated with USAC Midget Car racing such as Darland and Kenyon.
The only difference is Trenton Darland is the son of two time USAC National Midget Champion Dave Darland and Brice Kenyon is 7 time USAC National Midget Champion Mel Kenyon's son. Trenton was behind the wheel of the "9 car" Beast and Brice drove the yellow 61 Kenyon made famous by Mel and Don Kenyon.
Separating winner Ave and third place Darland was USAC newcomer Chad DeSelle, driving for car owner Jim Coonan. Anderson's Focus opener was the first USAC event for both DeSalle and Coonan. Coonan builds his own cars, while the rest of the field features cars that are household names to USAC fans, Beast, Stealth, Kenyon, Hawk and Kunz.
"It was terrific to see the variety of familiar names and cars along with new names and cars at our opening event at Anderson," said Eric Bunn USAC's National Coordinator for the Ford Focus Series. "Fans will be able to see the second generation drivers like Trenton Darland and Brice Kenyon compete alongside drivers like Tony Ave and the new drivers who will be our next 'class' of fan favorites," Bunn continued.
The USAC Ford Focus Midget Series cars are powered by a sealed, spec Ford Zetec engine, supplied by SCREAM of Harbor City, CA. Each Ford Zetec engine is up-fitted with fuel injection and accessories designed specifically for the series, while the engine and its components are as produced on Ford's assembly lines and found in the world's best selling car, the Ford Focus.
The USAC Indiana Ford Focus Midget Series returns to action Sunday, April 27, at Baer Field Speedway in Fort Wayne, IN while the USAC Southern California Ford Focus Series presented by the Southern California Ford Dealers next event is Saturday, April 26, at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, CA.
