A.J. Davis of Spartanburg, S.C. scored his initial USAC feature victory in Friday night's 25-lap USAC Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus Midget Car race at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C.
Davis wheeled a Seymour Enterprises Hawk to the victory on the 4/10-mile semi-banked pavement, beating fast qualifier and series point leader Chase Scott, Kevin Conway, Mike Ward and Michael Sboro to the checkered flag.
Scott emerged from the race with an 11-point lead over Sboro in the standings going into this Saturday night's racing program at Big Daddy's South Boston (Va.) Speedway. A 25-lap feature is on tap at the 4/10-mile paved oval.
Davis is expected to be among favorites for victory when the USAC Midwest Ford Focus Midget Car Series debuts at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway April 18. Sunday's originally-scheduled Midwest opener at Anderson was postponed by bad weather.
The USAC California Ford Focuses will resume their 2004 campaign this Saturday night at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway as part of the "Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic." The Western Midgets compete in a 100-lapper at Madera, while the Focuses compete in a 25-lapper on the 1/3-mile pavement. Sunday's California Ford Focus Midget Car race at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, part of the track's Orleans USAC Sprint and Midget Nationals tripleheader, was postponed by rain and will possibly be rescheduled for a date later in 2004.
