HARRIS WINS THIRD USAC FORD FOCUS MIDGET MAIN AT IRWINDALE AND FIFTH OF SEASON
By Tim Kennedy
IRWINDALE, Calif., May 28 - Midget and TQ Midget veteran Alex Harris, aboard his own TCR chassis, won his third consecutive USAC Ford Focus Midget 35-lap feature Saturday on the Irwindale Speedway paved third-mile. It was his fifth main event victory during his initial FF campaign. As fifth fastest qualifier in a 21-car field he started second in a six-car inverted lineup.
Point leader Audra Sasselli started third and ran a close second to Harris all the way in her Dave Zoriki Beast. She tried an inside pass entering the first turn on lap 14 after the second of two caution flags for solo spins. She trailed by 0.696 seconds. Pole starter Bobby Owens drove his Stealth to third, 1.663 seconds behind Harris. Rookies Benny Moon and Jace Meier completed the top five in a pair of Ron and Kim Sutton Stealths.
The USAC Ford Focus Midgets were making their third appearance of the 2005 season at IS on Saturday night. USAC Western States Midget and TQ Midget veteran Harris, the fifth fastest qualifier, started second and led all 35-laps. It was his third consecutive IS FF Midget victory on the third-mile and his fifth of the season, including a main event victory a week earlier at the paved Stockton Speedway. He also has a FF triumph in the same TCR chassis on the dirt Ventura Raceway. He had his hands full Saturday holding-off third-starter Audra Sasselli, the 29-year old point leader and a USAC FF Midget winner at IS last year. She tried an inside pass of Harris entering turn one after a lap 14 caution flag, but trailed by 0.696 seconds after the finish. Pole starter Bobby Owens was third, 1.663 seconds behind Harris. Rookies Benny Moon and Jace Meier completed the top five. Seventeen of the season-high 21 starters finished and 15 completed all 35 laps.
