OAKLEY DOMINATES AT BECOME FIFTH STRAIGHT CAROLINA/VIRGINIA FEATURE WINNER

INDIANAPOLIS -- Threatening skies didn't keep Aron Oakley from becoming the fifth winner in the USAC Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus Midget Series Saturday night at Hickory. Oakley charged to the front of the field, taking the lead from Michael Sboro on Lap 4 and holding on for his first win of 2006.

The feature event was shortened to 32 laps due to rain and Oakley was declared the winner. Sboro finished second, followed by Mario Clouser, Chase Scott and Mark Burt.

Oakley dominated the field and never slowed until the second caution came out. On Lap 32, Bradley Riethmeyer lost control while after making contact with another car and spun. The rain arrived before Riethmeyer's car could be removed from the track.

The rain was a close call for Oakley though. Moments after the caution came out, the rain started, and his car began to sputter, not because of fuel shortage, but because of the precipitation. However, it wasn't enough to stop him outright.

"We had six gallons of fuel left, but the ignition box got wet and it started to miss," Oakley said. "I knew if we pulled in we wouldn't get it (the win)."

Scott continues to lead the point standings by 80 heading into the next race on Aug. 11 at Friendship Motor Speedway in Elkin, N.C. Burt moved into second ahead of Riethmeyer.
