JACOBSEN WINS USAC JUNIOR FORD FOCUS MIDGET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
VENTURA, CALIF. (November 24, 2009) -- Rising oval racing talent Alex Jacobsen ended his 2009 season in perfect fashion on Saturday (November 21), capturing the USAC Junior Ford Focus Young Guns National Championship at Ventura Speedway. The Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle development driver showed great skill and race craft, piloting his USAC Midget entry to his inaugural USAC California Junior Ford Focus Series feature race victory.
The USAC California Junior Ford Focus Series season-finale started off ideally for Jacobsen, as the No. 98 Cory Kruseman Racing driver captured the win in his eight-lap Heat race. As result, Jacobsen earned a fifth place starting position for the Young Guns National Championship race.
When the 14-car field returned to the 1.5-mile Ventura Speedway dirt oval a short time later, Jacobsen was among those that enjoyed a clean start. Utilizing an inside line run to good effect, the two-time karting champion soon found himself in third place, routinely challenging second for position. Just as Jacobsen was poised to make a potential pass for position, the race was halted for the race leader flipping his Ford Focus Midget.
On the ensuing restart, Jacobsen once again got away cleanly, slotting in right behind the new race leader. The 14 year-old San Jose driver remained patient behind the wheel lap after lap, looking for the right opportunity. While it initially appeared as though the leader would not make any mistakes, Jacobsen's chance came just as the field was about to get the white flag. When the leader briefly misjudged the speed of a slower lap car, Jacobsen dove to the inside of turn three. By the exit of turn four, the Cory Kruseman Racing rookie was in the lead. Jacobsen, running a mistake-free final lap, scored his first win of the 2009 campaign, taking home the USAC Ford Focus Young Guns National Championship title.
"Alex Jacobsen is an impressive young talent," stated Ron Sutton, head of driver development. "Last year he raced Karts ... and now ... in his first year of racing cars ... first year on dirt ovals ... he wins the National Championship. Simply amazing what can happen when talented drivers get plugged into the right team and people."
