JERRY COONS JR. THIRD IN ALL NIGHTER
ROSSBURG, Ohio -- September 25, 2006 -- Jerry Coons Jr. drove the No. 199 Ford to the Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team's fourth podium finish of the season early Sunday morning at Eldora Speedway. Rain plagued Mopar Thunder at the Four Crown Nationals forcing Friday's qualifying to Saturday. When it was Coon's turn to qualify, the USAC veteran driver set quicktime at 15.739. Coon's teammate, rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. out timed the veteran with a lap of 15.658. Only Mat Neely turned in a better time placing Stenhouse second and Coons third on the starting grid. The rain came and went during Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning, altering the track conditions hourly. Team Manager Chris Santucci and the Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team picked what they thought would be the best setup for the ever-changing track. After numerous rain delays the green flag dropped around 5am Sunday morning. Jerry Coons dashed by his younger teammate for second in the opening laps of the race. Stenhouse spun the No. 35 on the second lap of the race unfortunately collecting several cars.
Jerry Coons Jr. continued on fighting for position with Mike Brecht and fellow veteran Dave Darland. Brecht would slip by Coons but the Arizona native would hold off Darland to finish third.
"The guys gave me a great race car tonight and this morning," said Coons. "I had a shot in lapped traffic and I didn't capitalize on it. Mike Brecht was a little quicker than we were. Overall a pretty good night points wise for the team so that is the main objective."
The top three finish keeps the team third in the owner's points race with one race to go. The podium finish is also the team's best finish at Eldora Speedway.
"We have kind of been struggling in this thing at Eldora so it is good to come here claim a top three finish," smiled Coons.
Sunday morning's top three finish is Jerry Coon's seventh top three finish driving for Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing.
The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team recorded feature starts No. 98 and 99 Sunday morning. The team is expected to record their 100th start at Kansas Speedway this Saturday. The Memphis, Tennessee based team first started racing full time in the USAC Silver Crown Series in 2000.
