EARL'S LEADERS STAR AT TERRE HAUTE; YELEY'S LEAD BACK TO 45
J.J. Yeley continues to lead the 2002 Earl's Pro-Lite 350 Fast Qualifier Championship after weekend USAC racing action. He leads Tracy Hines by 45 points in the new standings, with a $20,000 year-end cash bonus on the line.
Yeley won Saturday night's "Fall Harvest Classic" Sprint Car finale at Terre Haute, Ind., while Hines finished second and won the 2002 Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Championship by 13 points over Yeley. J.J. qualified fourth and Tracy sixth.
Danny Stratton, third in the USAC Western Midget Car points, was Saturday night's fastest qualifier at Perris, Calif.
Points will be available this Friday when the USAC Weld Racing Series qualifies for the "Little Trees Salt City 100" at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The 100-mile race is slated Saturday.
A $20,000 bonus will be paid to the driver accumulating the most points during 2002 in five USAC racing series, computed through an international point system utilized specifically for this title.
The system somewhat mirrors the system used for years for determining the World Driving Champion, with nine points for fast qualifying time, six for second, four for third, three for fourth, two for fifth and one for sixth. Series included in the Earl's Pro-Lite 350 Hose Fast Qualifier Championship are the Weld Racing Silver Crown Series, the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series, Western Sprint Car Series, National and Western Midget Car Series.
The $20,000 cash bonus will be presented at the USAC Champions Night in Indianapolis at season's end.
