Wise, Hines & Yeley close on Earl's leader Steele.
The $20,000 battle for the 2002 Earl's Pro-Lite 350 Fast Qualifier Championship heated up over the weekend, with drivers Josh Wise, Tracy Hines and J.J. Yeley closing ground on point leader Dave Steele.
Wise, the fastest qualifier for Saturday night's USAC Western Midget Car race at Santa Maria, Calif., and Hines, third-fastest qualifier for Saturday night's USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race at Terre Haute, Ind., share second in the new standings, only 10 behind Steele.
Yeley, fourth-fastest at Terre Haute, trails the leader by 11 going into this Saturday night's Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Derek Davidson was the fastest Terre Haute qualifier.
A $20,000 bonus will be paid to the driver accumulating the most points during 2002 in five USAC racing series, computed through an international point system utilized specifically for this title.
The system somewhat mirrors the system used for years for determining the World Driving Champion, with nine points for fast qualifying time, six for second, four for third, three for fourth, two for fifth and one for sixth. Series included in the Earl's Pro-Lite 350 Hose Fast Qualifier Championship are the Weld Racing Silver Crown Series, the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series, Western Sprint Car Series, National and Western Midget Car Series.
The $20,000 cash bonus will be presented in January at the USAC National Awards Dinner in Indianapolis, Ind.
