Hines & Yeley earn $5,000 Earl's bonuses
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. and J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. each earned a $5,000 bonus from Earl's Plumbing as they wrapped up USAC "fast qualifier" championships Saturday night at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park.
Hines posted the fastest qualifying time for the National/Western Midget race and Yeley was the second-fastest, giving Hines the National Midget FQ title and Yeley the Western Midget FQ title. Each will receive their Earl's awards at the December 5 USAC "Champions Night" at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, Ind.
Chad Nichols was the fastest qualifier for the Tucson Western Sprint Car race and that Earl's title will be settled this Thursday night at Irwindale, Calif. Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. leads Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. by five points with nine available at Irwindale. Lewis, the 2003 Western Sprint Car driving champion, was fifth-fastest at Tucson, while Hunt was not among the top-six.
This year, each USAC National and Western Series qualifying champion will receive a $5,000 bonus from Earl's in recognition of their accomplishment. Points are earned at each USAC event based on an international system awarding the top-six qualifiers with points in the following scale: 1st-9. 2nd-6, 3rd-4, 4th-3, 5th-2, 6th-1.
