Rick Hendrix of Canoga Park, Calif. bolted to second in the new Earl's Plumbing Western Sprint Car qualifying standings with his fast qualifying time Saturday at Madera, Calif. He now trails Tony Hunt, winner of Saturday's Madera Western Sprint race, by 10 points in the Earl's points.
Michael Lewis, leading the USAC Western Sprint points, posted the fastest Western Midget qualifying time at Madera Saturday as the Western Midget Earl's standings saw no change in the "top-five."
Earl's points this week will be distributed at USAC National Midget Car races Thursday and Friday nights in Indiana. The 52nd Clabber Girl "Hut Hundred" runs Thursday night at the Terre Haute Action Track and the Mopar "Indianapolis Twin 25s" are scheduled Friday night at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
This year, each USAC National and Western Series qualifying champion will receive a $5,000 bonus from Earl's in recognition of their accomplishment. Points are earned at each USAC event based on an international system awarding the top-six qualifiers with points in the following scale: 1st-9. 2nd-6, 3rd-4, 4th-3, 5th-2, 6th-1.
