Hunt Nails Down Earl's Title; East Close!
USAC Valvoline Western Sprint Car point leader Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. locked up a 2004 Earl's fast qualifier championship Saturday, posting sixth-fastest qualifying time at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park. He leads runner-up Michael Lewis by 11 points with only nine available in Thursday night's series finale at Irwindale, Calif.
National Midget point leader Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. has two challengers in the battle for that series' Earl's Fast Qualifier title following Saturday's Tucson racing program. East qualified fourth at Tucson but Dave Steele, the fastest Tucson qualifier, is now tied with Josh Wise, eight points in arrears with nine available Thursday at Irwindale.
Jerome Rodela has already locked up the Earl's FQ Western Midget honors, while Chris Rahe has likewise locked up the California Ford Focus FQ honors.
Points are traditionally awarded at each USAC event based on an international system awarding the top-six qualifiers with points in the following scale: 1st-9, 2nd-6, 3rd-4, 4th-3, 5th-2, 6th-1.
Each USAC National, Western and Ford Focus Midget Car Earl's Plumbing FQ Champion will be honored at USAC's Champions Night ceremony in Indianapolis in December. The National and Western FQ champs will receive $5,000 each, while the Ford Focus FQ champs will each receive $1,500.
