Steele Closing in Earl's Sprint/Midget Points
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla., who leads the 2004 Earl's Plumbing Fast Qualifier standings in the Weld Racing Silver Crown Series, took steps to improve his ranking in the Valvoline National Sprint Car and National Midget Car qualifier points Saturday night at Salem (Ind.) Speedway.
Steele, who won both Salem feature events, was the fastest Midget qualifier and third in Sprints. He now trails Earl's Sprint leader Levi Jones by just five points and Earl's Midget leader Bobby East by nine.
Earl's fast qualifier honors this past week went to Jay Drake (Salem Midgets), Steele (Salem Sprints), and Chris Rahe (Calif. Ford Focuses at Petaluma).
Earl's points this week will be up for grabs at Springfield, Ill. (Weld Racing Silver Crown), Madera, Calif. (Western Sprint and Calif. Focus), Xenia, Ohio (Midwest Focus), and Elkin, N.C. (Carolina/Virginia Focus).
Points are traditionally awarded at each USAC event based on an international system awarding the top-six qualifiers with points in the following scale: 1st-9, 2nd-6, 3rd-4, 4th-3, 5th-2, 6th-1.
Each USAC National, Western and Ford Focus Midget Car Earl's Plumbing FQ Champion will be honored at USAC's Champions Night ceremony in Indianapolis in December. The National and Western FQ champs will receive $5,000 each, while the Ford Focus FQ champs will each receive $1,500.
