Wolfe Claims "Dirt" Title As Hines Wins At Terre Haute
Drake Seriously Injured In Heat-Race Accident

John Wolfe of Winchester, Ind. claimed the 2001 USAC Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car championship Saturday night at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. He finished third behind race winner Tracy Hines in the series finale to beat series runner-up Shane Hollingsworth by 30 points. Hollingsworth failed to finish at Terre Haute after leading the first three laps in a "substitute car" after encountering mechanical problems with his primary car during practice.

Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif., USAC's Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car point leader entering Saturday night's Terre Haute activities, was seriously injured in an accident during the third Midget car heat race. He was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and transferred to Indianapolis Methodist Hospital, suffering a "closed head injury," broken arm and broken collarbone. He was listed in "serious but stable" in the Indianapolis Methodist Hospital neuro-critical-care unit.

Hines, of New Castle, Ind., led all but the first three laps of the Terre Haute 30-lapper in the Greg Wilke Fesco Mopar/Hoosier Tire Mopar/Stealth to beat Matt Westfall, Wolfe, Critter Malone and Davey Ray.
