Jay Drake and Dave Darland are locked in a struggle for the USAC WorldCom National Midget Car Series point lead, but both better be watching defending USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Champion Tony Elliott this weekend when the Midget Car series joins the Sprint Cars for a return to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kans.
Elliott won Sunday night's USAC Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car feature at Kokomo, Ind. and could be a spoiler for the point leaders at the 1/2-mile Kansas City oval, which has switched from pavement to dirt for the 2001 season. Drake leads Darland by only six points as both are hoping to garner their initial USAC WorldCom National Midget championship. Drake finished second to Kasey Kahne in last year's standings and Darland was third in the 2000 points.
The Midget Cars share this weekend's billing with the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars with feature events for both each night. Activities begin each night with practice at 5 pm, qualifying at 6 and racing at 7:30. Twenty-lap features for each series are on tap Friday, with 30-lappers for each on Saturday.
Elliott led all but the first four laps of Sunday night's 20-lap "regional" race at the Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway to beat John Wolfe, Critter Malone (who led laps 1-4), Steve Paden and Clay Klepper to the checkered flag. Wolfe's finish boosted him into the series point lead going into a July 15 race at Kokomo. A.J. Felker, Elliott and Shane Hollingsworth won heat races and Brad Kuhn won the semi.
Local interest at Lakeside Speedway will include Midget Car drivers Todd Jackson and Bill Allen of Independence, Mo., Ron Kuhn of Lee's Summit, Mo., Phil Shapel of Wichita, Kans., Jeremiah Sillman of Alvo, Neb., plus Colorado's Dave Strickland, Jr. of Englewood.
Aaron Fike of Galesburg, Ill., winner of Saturday night's USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet race at Richmond, Va., is also among entries for the Kansas City events.
